MSDP was a project developed from scratch to support inter-domain multicasting. For MSDP, I served both as an individual contributor as well as a segment leader.
For the individual contribution, the responsibility was to implement inheritance feature which made it possible for MSDP Peers to inherit the global MSDP level attributes into the MSDP Peers. Optimized above inheritance to support scaled topologies. The inheritance involved communication between several processes and involved taking inputs from command line interface which indicated whether a value should be inherited from global level. I used bit masks to store flags indicating if a Peer is inheriting any actual value and took it the backend so that there is no too and fro communication between the CLI and the protocol stack. This eliminated the need of calling all the Peers who had inherited any global attribute, repeatedly, in case when there was any change in the global attribute. This drastically improved the performance and peers of large scale were able to inherit values within a span of millisecond.
As the segment lead of a four-member team for one of the project segment, I directed efforts in designing and integrating a command line interface (CLI) for 10 specific MSDP commands. My role encompassed understanding project goals, coordinating team tasks, contributing to CLI design, overseeing integration with the protocol stack, and ensuring comprehensive verification and testing. Additionally, I facilitated discussions on MSDP components, created detailed documentation, and conducted internal brainstorming sessions. I guided the team in developing a user-friendly CLI, aligning with the project's objective of enhancing inter-domain multicast communication and integrating MSDP with PIM. This initiative aimed to facilitate inter-domain multicasting with the help configurations provided by the developed CLI commands.
Segment Routing - Traffic Engineering Local Constraint Shortest Path First - the project was an enhancement to the existing segment routing traffic-engineering module of Ribbon Product NPT(Neptune). This feature introduces full CSPF(Constraint Shortest Path First) path computation for SR-TE Tunnel LSPs and was an extension to the existing explicitly-defined calculation method for SR-TE tunnel LSPs.
This new calculation method is called "locally computed". It computes full explicit TE path for SR-TE LSP based on defined constraints, returning a list of SIDs consisting of adjacency SIDs. The scope of the path is IGP domain (ISIS level/OSPFv2 area). The computed path can contain both types of adjacencies - protected and unprotected. The constraints which were introduced are : Admin groups, Include/exclude hops, SRLG(Shared Risk Link Group), IGP/TE/Delay metric optimisation.
The project was to design and develop the feature and to extend the path computation to support LCSPF based paths.
